Am taking a slow Sunday - watching movies while doing other things - and right now, watching 'Bell Book and Candle' for the umpteenth time. What draws me back to this movie - the story of a witch who falls in love with a mortal and has to face what that means - is its style. Kim Novak is extremely cool, in many sense of the word. Beautiful and stylish, she is also not emotional. James Stewart, as always, is charming and the tiniest bit bumbling. The movie overall is smoothly done - and you can't go wrong with a Siamese cat. It's the kind of movie that makes one want to have a martini and smoke a long cigarette.
There are some odd things about the movie - James Stewart's colouring for one. But it doesn't take away from the style. Even the mildly silly nightclub scenes are fun - and who wouldn't love a neighbourhood 'cool' club?
While I don't intend on taking up witchcraft, I do think I'll let the rest influence me.
I just watched this movie last week - it was the first time I'd seen it. I
agree, the style was great. I really liked the set decoration, especially
James Stewart's office.
